Where to hike on Slovenia's coast?
Hiking trails run along the coast and through the Istrian countryside. The paths lead you past vineyards, olive groves, natural attractions, pleasant Istrian villages and cultural attractions. Below you will find some suggestions of good hikes around us.
1. Parenzana Trail
Originally a historic railway connecting Trieste (Italy) to Poreč (Croatia), the Parenzana Trail is now a scenic route perfect for hiking and cycling. The Slovenian section runs through coastal towns like Koper, Izola, and Piran, offering breathtaking sea views, olive groves, and vineyards. You can walk part of the trail between Izola and Strunjan, passing through old railway tunnels and cliffs.
2. Strunjan Nature Reserve
For a peaceful coastal hike, the Strunjan Nature Reserve offers stunning cliffs, salt pans, and lush forests. A popular trail leads from Strunjan to Moon Bay (Mesečev Zaliv), a secluded beach with crystal-clear waters. The panoramic views from the Strunjan Cliffs, which are the highest sea cliffs in the Adriatic, make this hike unforgettable.
3. Piran to Fiesa Coastal Walk
This short but scenic hike connects the picturesque town of Piran with the quiet Fiesa Bay. The trail follows the coastline, passing through rocky beaches and Mediterranean vegetation. It’s an easy walk with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the sea breeze.
4. Dragonja Valley
If you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path adventure, the Dragonja Valley is a hidden gem. Located inland, this hike takes you through lush forests, small waterfalls, and old stone mills along the Dragonja River. It’s perfect for nature lovers seeking a quiet escape from the busier coastal areas.
